The Real Reason Israel Keeps Bombing Palestine

On a day where we give thanks, blessings abound for many of us, but truthfully amid the chaos of the world it's hard to find the right words. I’ve had to force myself to sit down and process the atrocities we’ve been witnessing over the past 6+ weeks as the relentless attacks on Gaza under the guise of justice cut deeper and more somber. The air feels heavy - so much sadness, loss, blood spilled, babies killed. And for what? For righteousness? For religion?

No. It's because Gaza has gas and oil to exploit.

Israel bombs children and the rich laugh. Babies die and uncles are shot, mothers buried by bombs and children's bodies bagged, limbs scattered as scarlet reminders of crushed children's dreams -- and the world is distracted, entrenched in a narrative of nuance and defense. Did they deserve it? You chatter at the TV screen while our sister takes her last breath.

On October 29th, Israel granted 12 licenses to 6 companies to explore and "discover" natural gas fields in and around Falestine. He who holds the resources wields the power. And so it goes. The U.S. and Europe are accomplices in one of the worst human crimes of our lifetime: over Eleven Thousand lives extinguished in six weeks, maybe even Fourteen Thousand lives now terminated as the latest estimate ripples through the airwaves. Make no mistake, this is a genocide.

In their haste for greatness, politicians clamor atop their prized piles of bodies and finally seize.....what? Once they pillage the oil, land, and gas from Gaza, killing all culture and nature and life in sight, grabbing at the bloodstained fabric left behind by a desperate mother who outlived her baby for a brief moment before another bomb hits - What then? What is it they're really after? At the end of the day, what does it mean to win?

Promises of riches dangle in front of those who seek: Money - power - sex - ego - excess - Domination, drugs, dopamine.

What does it mean to win?

To chase a high to bury the guilt of a lifetime of a corrupted mind, when you can do nothing to quiet the knowledge that you've murdered again, and again, and again.

To dull the ache of shame and pain that haunts you at night, your complicity in others' suffering gnawing at your dreams. "Well, at least it wasn't me."

What does it mean to win?

To feel valued, to belong, in a time when you once were made to feel small. To make up for the time in your life when you simply were not valued at all. To fill the hole of hurt that gapes, desperate for validation, demanding more, more, more.

What does it mean to win?

Pillaging our Mother for her natural resources as if she didn't give us shelter, food, and all that we require.

Money and power are such wicked weapons in a world so beautiful and wide, propelling the perennial greed of certain humans who walk this earth. Whoever first thought to dominate another and label him "other" simply didn't understand their tongue. He didn't understand that "other" is in Mother. Is in Brother. That we need each other.

What does it mean to win?

To wish. To hope. To love.

To win – Down with colonization, down with occupation. May we witness Liberation.

We are all intertwined, and the pain of one is felt across the world. Energy is neither created nor destroyed. The ripples of real-time suffering have made their way across the world and back again through this crazy medium of communication, while we grapple with everyday life as the clock goes on. I only hope we can honor these innocent children, mothers and brothers who |srael has k*lled, and bear witness to their suffering. It is the very least we can do. To speak out against violence and hate.

So, what does it mean to win?

My hope is that one day, victory will be synonymous with peace. Vitriol can evaporate (inshallah) and we will settle disagreements as comrades, not colonizers. That we count our blessings, because only gratitude and love can fill the missing pieces of us. As Falestine is besieged, let us honor them and show them they are not alone. Because I don't know how we can go on killing, but I do know one thing: Fighting for others' freedoms can grant you your own.

I believe in you.

Wow, I can’t believe it was two months ago that I last posted! Yes, the holidays were busy, but really that’s no excuse. I’ve convinced myself I’m too busy, but really I just did not carve out the time for something that I want to create and share with the world.

I finally started this blog because I wanted a creative outlet and to be true to myself – I had the idea to start a blog about 5 years ago, and never did.

WHY? I asked myself.

Because I was nervous, I was afraid, I didn’t want to face judgement. Even though I knew I wanted to share with the world.

Now that I’ve started, I’m so glad I did (even though this post is later than I had envisioned!) Better late than never, and now I’m experiencing relief instead of regret.

That’s the thing, isn’t it? It’s always tough to start. But once you’ve started, whatever it is, it’s so easy to continue the rhythm, the cycle, the routine.

That’s the key to habits. I’ve never thought of myself as someone who has many habits because I love adventure, but the truth is, habits start to creep into your daily life whether you like to admit it or not. Some things become rote. Enjoying TV a few nights a week instead of exercising…staying up late because you did the night before, instead of getting to bed so you can feel rested the next day…going to work day in and day out without a future plan or clearly defined goal…Essentially allowing aspects of your life to stall, when you know you want the opposite – growth and progress.

Do you ever feel that way? Like you were just meant for something bigger, but can’t seem to shake yourself of your habits in everyday life?

We can be whatever we want to be, whoever we want to be. The choice starts with you. Just take that first step.

If you want to get into fitness – make a plan for yourself. “Monday after work at 6pm, I am going to go to the gym / start that yoga class / do this workout.” Put your sneakers by the door, lay your outfit on the bed, and commit. Get in the mindset.

If you want to start meal prepping – make a plan for yourself. “Sunday at 2pm I am going to begin meal prepping. What do I need now to be successful and get me there?” Write down your ingredients, go shopping, and be prepared for Sunday. You can do it!

If you don’t commit one day, then get right to it the next. Let that be even more motivation to start the next moment strong and focused.

You owe it to yourself to live up to your potential.

Don’t let a fleeting moment of discomfort stand between you and the vision you have for yourself.

Get up early and enjoy the sunrise.

If you slept in, set aside time to watch the sunset.

Go for a walk to clear your mind.

Write down your worries.

And then face your fears.

Don’t give up.

There is just one, brief moment of fear that separates you from greatness.

DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

Turn Leftover Lemons into Easy All-Purpose Cleaner!

IMG_1066+%282%29.jpg

I love trying to reduce my waste - it’s a rewarding game that has great effects on our planet, and an amazing effect on your wallet, too! All you need to make your own cleaner over and over again are just a few inexpensive ingredients:

  • distilled white vinegar

  • lemon halves

  • and water!

IMG_1079 (2).JPG

This DIY cleaner is an amazing way to repurpose your citrus when you’ve already squeezed the living daylights out of them for your homemade hummus, fresh hors-d'œuvres, or personal stress-relief regimen (hummus, anyone?)

All you need to do is:

  1. Drop your lemon halves into a mason jar (or other container with a tight seal)

  2. Pour distilled white vinegar inside until the container is 2/3 full

  3. Top it off with 1/3 water, close the lid, and pop it in the fridge for a week (or three!)

I usually forget about mine for 3-4 weeks, and then remove it to refill my spray bottle when it starts running low. I use an old plastic spray bottle from before I started learning about zero-waste practices - and I realized I could make my own cleaner for a much lower price!

Grab your spray bottle, funnel, and a strainer - which is VERY important! If you don’t strain the lemon liquid, you will get pulp in the spray bottle, which can become lodged in the nozzle and jam. Trust me…I learned the hard way!

When you’re ready to pour your cleaner:

  1. Unscrew the spray device from the bottle

  2. Put the funnel in the opening and place the strainer on top, nesting inside the funnel

  3. Hold the nested strainer & funnel to keep it steady, and pour the vinegar mixture through the strainer & funnel, into the bottle

  4. Discard lemon halves, screw the nozzle head back on, and enjoy your new cleaner!

I use this to clean my kitchen counters, the stove, stainless steel sink, bathroom counters, bathtub…you name it!

There are quite a few benefits to this DIY cleaner!

  1. You’re reusing a plastic container that you would have thrown in the recycling (which may have never been recycled, even if you tossed it in the right bin)

  2. Your citrus scraps are living a second life before making their way to the trash

  3. No harmful chemicals, fumes, or hazardous ingredients

  4. Your counters, windows, etc. will be lemony fresh — with biodegradable and environmentally-safe ingredients!

While distilled white vinegar usually comes in plastic, you can at least buy larger containers, which reduces waste AND cost overall - less packaging for more product. This is true for many bulk items.

If you’re still using chemicals in your daily life, check out the Environmental Working Group to see their ratings on the environmental and health impact of different products. This non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment is an extremely helpful resource!

Cheers to saving money and safer cleaning!
